Substance Abuse
In many of our locations FPS offers substance abuse services for adolescents and young adults requiring substance abuse assessment, treatment and/or relapse prevention services. The program objective is to assist individuals to understand their alcohol and other drug use and the stages of change in overcoming drug problems. We facilitate movement through the stages of change to help teens make healthier choices in all areas of their lives. The Seven Challenges Program (copyright, 1995) is implemented in many areas around the country. This program is designed to help adolescents and young adult substance abusers to motivate a decision and commitment to change. It helps young people understand what it entails to give up a drug using life style and prepares them for success when they commit to such a change. The program is developmentally appropriate, research based, culturally sensitive and holistic. Developmentally Appropriate Young people are assisted in mastering developmental tasks to define their own identity, to learn systematic logical thinking and prepare for adult roles. The Seven Challenges addresses the drug use behavior, the underlying causes (including psychological problems) and life style issues as they relate to one another. Research Based Based on the latest research and evaluation literature, in particular the findings about (1) the underlying psychological problems that typically accompany drug abuse; (2) the stages of change in overcoming drug problems; (3) preparing individuals for change though motivational interviewing; and (4) resiliency. An evaluation and research outcome study has been conducted by the University of Arizona. 
The Seven Challenges has been implemented in a wide array of treatment settings (in-home, outpatient, intensive outpatient and day treatment), public and private schools, and public and private correctional facilities. Materials include the book, The Seven Challenges, and nine workbooks to complement the readings. |
